Mermaids of Hollywood

About a year ago (I think) I posted about a photo shoot done with the Kardashian girls and mentioned that a photographer was photographing celebrities as mermaids for a book: Mermaids of Hollywood. Unfortunately, as of right now, the book is only available as an iphone/ibook app!
Text from the book:
"Chronicles of Mermaids have been told for centuries in the form of legends and fairytales. Images of this sea queen have haunted artists in their efforts to bring the beauty, sexuality and mystery of the mermaid to life. The role of mythology is ever changing in society and it is with this in mind that photographer Mark Anderson has captured contemporary images of this mythical creature as she may appear in today’s society.

We're all familiar with the playful modern mermaid of Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid and of Darryl Hannah’s depiction of the human/animal creature in Splash. But lurking behind these light figures is the sadness and mystery of the mermaid's plight. Using over 60 female stars of the entertainment world, Photographer Mark Anderson brings us photos that weave together a never before seen perspective on what life could be like if Mermaids lived amongst us. His fantastical representations place the mermaid in often-unexplored territories to expose the roles to which we assign modern women: as sexualized beings, as temptresses, as mothers/daughters, and as creatures themselves constrained and created by myth"
I find the images all very interesting and would love to ask him what was the thought process behind each picture. The mermaids are certainly placed in some everyday situations and there are definitely some there just for laughs (the Kardashian Sardine pic.) I do think that there maybe a few too many sad mermaids though. What's your opinion?

Shelling

It's been raining here on the Grand Strand for almost the whole week. The Sea Captain and I saw this as a perfect opportunity for shelling. There we were at North Myrtle in the pouring rain doing the "Shell Stoop" at the high tide line finding lots of olives and cockles and even a few baby whelks when I spotted something I couldn't identify. The Sea Captain was unsure what it was as well so we picked up a few. It was a light brown and had a smooth shell it was smallish and almost shaped like a slipper shell. As we continued down the beach we commented on the overabundance of trash littering the shore; Orange peels, cigarette butts, bottle caps, peanut shells...it was disgusting. As we were bemoaning the trash we suddenly knew what the new shells were...Pistachio shells! We had a good laugh over our North Atlantic Pistachio shells and promptly dropped them in the trash!

Please consider this post a friendly reminder to pick up your trash at the beach.

Hipster Ariel Sighting

She's gotten pretty darn popular lately. Especially after the mention in Time! So popular, in fact, that she was seen on a sign at a Pro-Choice march! (How's that for Mer-politics!?) I guess that shows just how "current" she can be.

I'm not sure I'm "into" the whole hipster thing... (I think it's kind of silly to dislike something becaus other people do and vice-versa, but to each his own) so I find her 'ironic' statements quite amusing.

Shark Week 2011 promo

This is from "Great White Invasion."  Our favorite shark specialist, Chris Fallows, goes diving in Guadalupe with Great Whites!

Incidently, Guadalupe may sound familiar because I have mentioned it here before. It is the best place to dive with the Great Whites!

Mermaid Sighting on America's Next Top Model

I'm not huge into reality shows so I didn't catch this one the first time around back in 2006 (boy am I slow.) My DVR did happen to record it the other day so I watched a bit (and mostly fastforwarded to the shoot.)
In each show the girls are given photo shoot assignments and in the episode The Girl Who Is A Model, Not A Masseuse, the girls are told that they must hang upside down in a net, in a mermaid tail, over a river market. If that wasn't enough raw fish get added to the nets for a little reality! CRAZY! I thought the girls did a pretty good job of hiding the discomfort and I was super shocked that they weren't more excited!
Here's a clip:

Joanie won the episode but in the end Danielle ended up winning the whole show!

Mermaid Esther Ofarim

Esther Ofarim singing Split Personality and with Rudy Carrel singing If Your Were The Only Girl from The Rudy Carrel Show (Dutch T.V. 1964)

I love YouTube, you can find the most fabulous and amazing things that you never knew existed.

Ocean Voyager

I added live streaming video (thanks to the Discovery Channel) of the "Ocean Voyager" exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Ga. Check it out at the bottom of the page and be sure to switch it around on the multiview! Hopefully they'll keep it up after Shark Week ends.

Shark Week 2011 starts soon!

I am so excited I can hardly stand it. My favorite holiday is just around the corner! Shark Week 2011 here we come!!

Shows start July 31st at 9PM. Check out the schedule here.

Also remember while Discovery Channel does tend to talk about attacks quite a bit, sharks are endangered! The point of Shark Week is to learn about sharks and maybe when we know them better we'll stop fearing them needlessly and figure out how to save them.

Bette Midler's Mermaid Delores Delago

The original(!?) 'wheelchair mermaid'! Bette Midler has apparently been doing the mermaid bit since 1980!

First a little history:

I find especially hilarious (given the current arguement over the creation of Gaga's mermaid act) the segment where the narrator says "The world had taken her career from her. She was a genius but everybody stole from her..."

And then singing New York, New York!

You can find more fab videos on Youtube!

Merman Sighting 1684

In 1684 Italian couple Elizabeth Nastasia and Peter Anthony Consiglio gave birth to a fish boy. According to his parents "when born, the boy was quite covered with the scales of fishes, having nevertheless a beautiful and comely neck and face with no unseemly colour. His head was adorned with curious flaxen hair and from the neck down to the sole of the foot, he is all over blackish and hairy intermixt with spots of several sorts and colours like the scales of a fish.'
'He is of human stature and tender-limbed. The bottoms of his feet are white and so are the insides of his hands, like unto shells of a sea tortoise. He is about ten year of age and called Barnardin."
His mother, being afraid for his safety kept him hidden and prayed over him hoping for a change. Unfortunately every time he would lose a scale another would be under it to replace it. Eventually he was found to be quite intelligent and sent away to be privately educated. He could speak Italian, French and Dutch but his education didn't save him from being exploited. Barnardin was 'exhibited' in London by a Mr. Barton where he was seen by the King and poor alike.

Katy Perry's Mermaid "Planking" and more mermaid Gaga

So obviously I'm the last person to hear about "planking" (laying flat on your stomach while balancing on something) but anyway, this morning Katy Perry tweeted a photo of herself "planking" in a mermaid costume saying "PROPER planking FTW! #itswhatArielwoulddo"! Now the rumor mill is swirling with theories that this could have something to do with her next music video! Very cool, and also not the first time Katy's been a bit fishy!
Of course not everyone is happy with the photo. Gaga's Little Monsters (what her fans are called) are ticked. They have been raging since the photo came out. Apparently they think Katy is ripping Gaga off!? Sounds kind of petty to me. It's been done before, will be done again...anyone remember Madonna's Cherish video? Ok how about Sade's video for No Ordinary Love? Or remember Bette Midler!?

And speaking of Gaga, she has once again mentioned doing something "fishy." On Taiwanese tv while discussing her next video, she said "I will also say that Yuyi is in incubation. I won't explain it but all the little monsters who are superfans will understand what I'm saying if they follow my twitter. Yuyi may just be born in the next video." Just so you know Yuyi is the name she gave to the mermaid she preformed as on Le Grande Journal.

At any rate... More mermaids = more interest in mermaids which = Awesome!

Mermaid Sighting on So You Think You Can Dance

Well, techinically a Siren sighting. I, of course, missed this when it came on but my Grandmother mentioned it to me and I managed to find a video:

All you need to know is that the dance is a waltz showing a man falling under the spell of a siren, and at the end, the kiss of death! The dancers are Jordan Casanova and Tadd Gadduang and the song is Nocturne.

Mermaid Style Article

There's an interesting article on StyleList about the recent reemergence of mythic fashion trends, which of course includes the big influx of mermaid styles this summer!

Check it out here.

Miranda on DVD

Finally a non-taped-from-the-VHS copy of Miranda is available on DVD from the company VCI! The movie orignially came out in 1948 (Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid also came out that year.)

"Paul Marton is a Harley Street doctor who announces to his wife that he intends to take a fishing holiday alone. He sets off for Cornwall and indulges in a spot of fishing until one day he catches a beautiful mermaid! Meanwhile, his wife receives a telegram saying that her husband will be returning accompanied by a patient. Expecting an aging invalid, she is shocked on their arrival to see a beautiful young woman with her legs wrapped in cloth. Will anyone discover Miranda’s fishy secret?"

I've seen the movie several times and it's quite funny and definitly recommended. Every time she eats a fish I laugh! Here's a clip where Miranda is taken to the zoo:

There was also a sequel released in 1954 called Mad About Men, but so far it hasn't been released by a studio. You can, however, find copies taped from TV on ebay.

Here's a fun fact, Glynis Johns later played Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins, and the butler/chauffer is David Tomlinson or Mr. Banks! (He was of course alo in Bedknobs and Broomsticks)

EDIT****

According to one of our swimmers (Michelle) Miranda, Mad About Men, and Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid are all going to be available streaming on Netflix!!

Beyonce the Mermaid

MTV premiered a special on Beyonce earlier this month called Year of 4. It opens with her frolicking on the  beach. “I’m always happy when I’m surrounded by water. I think I was a mermaid,” she says. “The ocean makes me feel really small and it makes me put my whole life into perspective… it humbles you and makes you feel almost like you’ve been baptized. I feel born again when I get out of the ocean.”

I unfortunately missed the premiere but you can undoubtedly catch it in a repeat.
