Weeki Wachee State Park celebrates 75 years of State Parks

This weekend Weeki Wachee park in FL celebrates the 75th anniversary of Florida State parks with specials on Saturday and Sunday (today and tomorrow!)

To clarify (since there seems to be some confusion,) this is not the Weeki Wachee anniversary, this is the anniversary of the State Park system in Fla.

The special event features a history presentation about Florida State Parks from the Civilian Conservation Corps and special mermaid performances from both current and former park mermaids. There will be information on the 159 other state parks set up in several information booths.
One booth will be dedicated to information all about Weeki Wachee's history from the time it first opened on Oct. 13, 1947 ( it was created by Newton Perry, an ex-navy frogman, who used underwater air hose breathing techniques for the show) all the way until today. There will be photo opportunities with the mermaids in retro mermaid tails and swimsuits as well as vintage props from old shows.
The 538 acre park, which is  the deepest fresh water cave system in the United States and the only water park that is fed completely by freshwater springs, has canoe and kayak rentals, volleyball and swimming at Buccaneer Bay (also there are water slides) with white sands and covered picnic areas.
The event is free with regular paid park admission. The event will begin at 10am and end at 5pm.

  1. How are you able to say that Weeki Wachee is celebrating it's 75th year if it only was founded in 1947......They celebrated their 60th year in 2007.
