Mermaid Sighting on Sesame Street

Ethel Mermaid was a parody of Ethel Merman seen on Sesame Street. Ethel Merman introduced I get a kick out of you in the musical Anything Goes in 1934. Ethel Mermaid sings I get a kick out of U as a parody. I haven't found a video yet, but I'll keep looking!

Announcer's voice: Ladies and gentlemen and sardines, Miss Ethel Mermaid!

I get no kick out of A
B, C and D are just letters to me
And E makes me endlessly blue
But I get a kick (she kicks a fish with her tail, as she does in each verse)
Out of U

I get no fun from an F
G, H and I merely cause me to sigh
And J really makes me boo-hoo
But I get a kick
Out of U

K, L, M, N
O, P, Q, R, S
Are nothing once you've seen them
'Though T and V don't appeal to me
I'm nuts for what's between them
W gives me no thrill
X, Y and Z are not my cup of tea
They just tell me the alphabet's through
But I get a kick
Out of U

All the fish: K, L, M, N
O, P, Q, R, S
Are nothing once you've seen them

Solo Fish: 'Though T and V don't appeal to her
She's nuts for what's between them

Ethel: W gives me no thrill
X, Y and Z are not my cup of tea
They just tell me the alphabet's through
But I get a kick
A really big kick
I get a kick
Out of U

  1. I think the most heartbreaking moment of my life wasn't when my folks split up, or I got in that car accident. No, the saddest moment was when I got too old to watch Sesame Street....
