Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea,

New to DVD tomorrow is Ponyo. It's an animated movie written, directed, and animated by Hayao Miyazaki. The plot centers on a girl/fish named Ponyo who befriends a five-year-old human boy, Sōsuke, and wants to become a human girl. It's quite obviously based on Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid.

Despite very little by way of advertising it's gotten good reviews all around. I think the animation is beautiful. For the first half hour we are treated to beautiful undersea shots practically uninterrupted by any real story. Don't expect the rest of the movie to be insanely deep like Howl's Moving Castle, or Spirited Away, but it does have meaning. One of the most important things you take from the movie is water is magical! Another feeling you'll take away from the movie is the importance of love. You love something not because of the way it looks but what it really is. Sosuke loves Ponyo, not as a girl or as a fish but as herself.
